Going “green” has always struck us at Charlie’s Professional as an anachronism. It sounds so 1968. So Whole Earth Catalog.
After all, we can talk the talk. Charlie’s cleaning products were developed way back in 1975.
But what’s environmentally responsible today involves many levels of behavior. Should you ask for a plastic straw at Starbucks so you don’t spill latte all over your car? You want to drink pure water, perhaps out of a plastic bottle imported from Fiji? Then: what becomes of those objects when you’re finished with them? Can you be sure they really get recycled? Or end up swirling around the Pacific Ocean?
So today, we take up a matter that shouldn’t cause much angst as we do our best for Mother Earth.
Let’s consider worker productivity. Some recent studies suggest that companies that adopt “green” practices and standards have employees who are more productive than average. The studies say workers are happier. Employers who embrace sustainability use it as an aid to employee recruitment and retention.
One study often cited is a 2012 survey of 5,200 French firms that followed ISO 14001 standards had workers better trained and had a greater degree of interpersonal contact, which can lead to better productivity — as much as 16 percent better.
And it seems to be paying off in job growth in places other than states that first come to mind when you think “green.”
Another experiment involved “happiness shocks” during the workday — think a few minutes break watching a zany Marx Brothers skit — that increased productivity as much as 20 percent. Shocks of real-world downers had conversely negative productivity consequences.
Then there’s the matter of actual “green” in the workplace. Plants, that is. A 2014 British study said floral presentations in office environments contributed to increased workplace satisfaction, better concentration and perceived air quality.
We could go on. But you get the idea. Green isn’t just what’s non-toxic, what protects human health without harming the environment. It’s a way of life we embrace at Charlie’s Professional.
We mean to produce green cleaners that have a beneficial impact on the health of the people who work in a building. Our grean cleaners make more efficient use of the few chemicals we use — and the way you use them.
